Who we are?

According to Resolution 659 of February 21, 2007, the Ministry of Education of the Capital District (SED) is an agency of the central sector with financial and administrative autonomy is intended to guide and lead the formulation and implementation of policies, plans and programs that guarantee the right to education and ensure the population access to knowledge and comprehensive training. In this sense, within the System of Quality Management, which applies to all district entities and should be complementary to the Internal Control Systems and Administrative Development, amendments Mission and Vision of the SED and created Policy and Quality.


Promote educational opportunities in the city to ensure access and retention of children and youth in the educational system in its various forms, levels and modalities, the quality and relevance of education, in order to form individuals capable to live productively, creatively and responsibly in the community.


The SED guarantee the right to education of children and youth of the city, district schools through modern human and inclusive process of forming a democratic, participatory, ongoing, personal, cultural and social.
The Ministry of Education of the Capital District was created by the Agreement Number 26 of May 23, 1955, the City Council. It is part of the central sector of the district administration, headed by the Mayor of Bogotá.


The Ministry of Education of the Capital District is the governing body of early childhood education (primary and secondary) and half in Bogotá. According to Decree 330 of 2008, which was restructured by the state, the functions of the SED are:
Formulate, direct and coordinate policies and plans of the Education Sector, in accordance with the District Development Plan, the Education Sector Plan, the Agreement 257 of 2006 and other laws of national order
Develop strategies to ensure access and retention of children and young people in education, as well as the relevance, quality and equity of education in its different forms, levels and modalities.
Develop programs and projects that help improve the quality of education. Promote research, innovation and development of curricula, teaching methods and use of educational media.
Define, guide and implement training policies and updating of teaching and administrative staff at the service of the SED.
Promote educational and pedagogical research being conducted by the Institute for Educational Research and Educational Development, IDEP, with the participation of colleges and education faculties.
